The Story
This is a wine of legendary, cult status among traditional Barolo lovers. "Piè Franco" refers to the vines being planted on their own rootstocks using the high-quality Michet clone of Nebbiolo. Sourced from the esteemed Gabutti vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, Cappellano’s strictly traditional approach results in a wine of profound authenticity.
The 2003 vintage was notoriously hot and dry across Europe. While many 2003 Barolos suffer from overripe, roasted fruit and harsh tannins, Cappellano’s old, deep-rooted, ungrafted vines managed to reach deeper water reserves, retaining a surprising amount of freshness and balance compared to its peers.
