The Story

A vibrant and soulful natural red, the 2022 La Marchigiana Bonarda is a "naked wine" crafted to honor the ancestral traditions of Nicola Catena. Fermented and aged for eight months in clay amphorae (tinajas) without added sulfites, it presents a deep purple hue and a complex balsamic nose of black olives, blackberries, and ripe plums. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied and remarkably fresh, showcasing a dry, earthy profile with a taut flow and supple, well-integrated tannins. Flavors of concentrated blueberry and dark fruit are laced with savory notes of graphite, cedar, and tobacco, leading to a long, persistent finish. Its unadorned style allows the pure character of the eastern Mendoza terroir and the heritage of the Bonarda grape to speak clearly.

92 Points -

An attractive, juicy bonarda with a very ripe and deep nose full of dark plums, morello cherries and spices. Graphite and hints of black olives and dark spices, too. Full-bodied, very flavorful and juicy on the palate with well-judged balance between ripeness and freshness. Tannins are tight, potent and well-grained, which will need at least a year to come around.

90 Points -

The 2022 Bonarda Catena La Marchigiana originates from Rivadavia and underwent fermentation in amphorae. A purple hue in the glass. Its balsamic nose presents distinctive notes of olives and blackberry. The palate delivers a dry and earthy experience, with a taut flow and supple tannins that lead to a lingering presence of black olive.
