The 2017 E. Guigal "Château d'Ampuis" is a racy and muscular Côte-Rôtie that reflects the solar intensity of a warm growing season. Sourced from seven exceptional estate terroirs on both the Côte Blonde and Côte Brune, this wine is aged for 38 months in 100% new French oak at the family's historic estate in Ampuis. The nose is remarkably expressive, offering a complex bouquet of black raspberries, cassis, and vanilla bean, seamlessly integrated with smoky bacon fat, incense, and spicy oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and velvety, featuring a dense core of blackberry and plum balanced by polished tannins and a vibrant acidity. The finish is long and succulent, showcasing the powerful yet refined structure that positions this bottling just a half-step behind Guigal's legendary "La-La" crus.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
A big step up over the 2017 Brune & Blonde (which I rated 91 points back in May 2021), Guigal's 2017 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis epitomizes the appellation, with sexy complexities of smoky bacon fat interlaced with skeins of blueberries and cherries. Full-bodied, creamy and lush in feel, finishing long and succulent, it's a terrific Cote Rotie to drink over the next 20 years.
