The Story

Fontodi, located in Panzano in the heart of Tuscany’s Conca d’Oro, is a benchmark estate for organically farmed, terroir-driven Sangiovese. Under the stewardship of Giovanni Manetti, Fontodi continues to deepen its legacy with each new addition to its portfolio—none more exciting than Pastrolo, now proudly bearing the Gran Selezione designation.

Fruit for this wine is sourced from historic vines planted in 1973 from the high-altitude zone of Lamole, an area renowned for producing particularly elegant and aromatic expressions of Sangiovese. The result is a Chianti Classico of precision and intensity; pouring a deep garnet in the glass and unfolding with layered aromas of black cherry, iris, blood orange, and warm spice. A distinct mineral thread – evoking pencil shavings and dusty slate – adds tension and length, giving the wine its refined and linear profile. This is a beautifully focused and expressive Gran Selezione that reflects both place and pedigree.

Pair with pork loin, truffle pasta, herb-crusted game meats, or grilled eggplant with aged balsamic glaze.

94 Points - Vinous

The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Pastrolo is the second vintage from a newly acquired parcel in Lamole at 600 meters in elevation. Aging in 500-liter barrels, along with the personality of this site, yielded a more austere Chianti Classico than most of the Fontodi wines. Lavender, sage, menthol and red plum lend an exotic, almost Mediterranean character throughout. There's a feeling of wildness that recalls the site itself.
