For nearly three decades, Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation, has been driven by a single question: What if…?
It is this spirit of curiosity that shaped The Altus. Beginning with the delicate, fruity distillate from our famously tall stills, Dr Bill matured the whisky in bespoke designer bourbon casks – crafted from slow-growth American white oak, seasoned to unlock creamy, honeyed depths.
But the journey didn’t end there. A sprinkling of 25-year-old whisky finished in Malmsey Madeira casks – a nod to Glenmorangie’s pioneering 1995 release, the world’s first Madeira-finished single malt – transformed The Altus into something truly remarkable.
Crafted from spirit born in Scotland’s tallest stills, The Altus (Latin for “high”) is matured in Glenmorangie’s bespoke designer bourbon casks before being lifted even further by a sprinkling of whisky finished in Malmsey Madeira wine casks – a nod to the distillery’s groundbreaking 1995 Madeira Wood Finish.
Silky and opulent, The Altus 25 Years Old opens with a fragrant bouquet of carnation, rose, orange blossom and honey, entwined with ripe peach, vanilla, almond and a hint of nutty toffee.
On the palate, layers of mandarin, apple, pear and peach burst forth, balanced by tart gooseberry and yellow plum. Sweet butter-candy tones melt into soft oak accents of marzipan, icing sugar and ripe banana, culminating in a long, harmonious finish that lingers with elegant sweetness.
A soft bouquet of carnation and rose entwines with orange blossom, honey, and ripe peach. Hints of vanilla, almond, and nutty toffee emerge.
Silky and luscious – mandarin, apple, pear, and peach meet a burst of tart gooseberry and yellow plum. Waves of butter-candy sweetness flow into marzipan, icing sugar, and ripe banana.
Long, smooth, and harmoniously sweet, lingering with an elegant echo of fruit.
