The Story

An exceptionally rare expression of Napa Valley wine, the 2023 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon originates from the estate’s vineyard in Oakville subregion of the Napa Valley in California. Screaming Eagle, founded in 1986 by Jean Phillips, is the quintessential American 'cult' winery, known for its tiny production and near mythical status among collectors. Now owned solely by businessman Stanley Kroenke, the estate maintains a philosophy of extreme quality control and 'patient winemaking', overseen by winemaker Nick Gislason. The vineyard is situated on a rocky, west-facing slope that benefits from excellent drainage and cooling breezes from the San Pablo Bay.

This vintage is characterized by its purity and structure. It displays a deep purple hue and a bouquet of crushed blackberries, crème de cassis, and spring flowers, integrated with notes of graphite and subtle toasted oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, showcasing fine tannins. The finish is known for its persistence, leaving a trail of blue fruit, licorice, and stony minerality.
100 Points - Jeb Dunnuck
The epitome of class and elegance, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon offers pure crème de cassis, liquid violets, crushed stone, graphite, and cedar notes on the nose. It's full-bodied on the palate, with remarkably polished tannins, flawless overall balance, and incredible length. This is never the biggest or richest wine in the vintage, yet the sheer level of purity, structure, and depth is absolutely incredible. Compared to the 2021, this is less powerful and made in a more elegant style, yet it's every bit as profound and compelling. It builds beautifully with time in the glass and already offers pleasure yet won't hit prime time for a decade and will cruise for 50+ years. Drink 2035-2075.
