Almaviva 2022

Almaviva began production in 1996 as ajoint venture between Chile's Viña Concha y Toro and Bordeaux's Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Michel Friou is the winemaker on the project and has been in charge of the wine since 2007. This year there is 72% cabernet sauvignon, 23% carmenere, 4% cabernet franc, and the remaining few drops are petit verdot. Aged for about 20 months in barrels (70% new), Friou's hand can be seen here, his style of soft, juicy, and sweet wines with the ripeness of the fruit in a state of juicy succulence. A full-bodied wine dominated by alcohol, which has reached no less than 15º this year. A voluptuous Almaviva.

What fabulous perfumed aromas of lavender, blackcurrants, graphite, tapenade and hints of sweet tobacco. So complex and sophisticated. Medium- to full-bodied with tannins that have an incredible finesse and length. It goes on for minutes. It’s all about elegance and class. There’s harmony and freshness for a dry year. Seductive and so long. 72% cabernet sauvignon, 23% carmenere, 4% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Drinkable now, but one for the cellar. Drink from 2028.

This complex red slowly reveals itself, beginning with opening notes of dried violet, cedar wood and turmeric that give way to a dense core of ripe blackberry and cassis, with hints of tobacco leaf and graphite underneath. There's plenty of structure, plus a gentle nudge of acidity to let the flavors play out on the chocolatey finish, with dense yet integrated tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2038. 15,000 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.
